Beating the Noise: New Statistical Methods for Detecting Signals in MALDI-TOF Spectra Below Noise Level
Background: The computer-assisted detection of small molecules by mass spectrometry in biological samples provides a snapshot of thousands of peptides, protein fragments and proteins in biological samples. This new analytical technology has the potential to identify disease associated proteomic patterns in blood serum. However, the presently available bioinformatic tools are not sensitive enoug...
متن کاملDevelopment of Nonlinear Lattice-Hammerstein Filters for Gaussian Signals
In this paper, the nonlinear lattice-Hammerstein filter and its properties are derived. It is shown that the error signals are orthogonal to the input signal and also backward errors of different stages are orthogonal to each other. Numerical results confirm all the theoretical properties of the lattice-Hammerstein structure.
متن کاملDetecting Fixed Amplitude Signals in a Fuzzy Gaussian Environment
In practical signal detection scenarios, parameters of a random process are often uncertain. In this paper, we model such uncertainties as fuzzy parameters of a stationary random process. A fuzzy Neyman-Pearson hypothesis test concept which accepts any number of fuzzy parameters is presented. A suitable decision rule is developed by applying theory for ordering fuzzy numbers, and stated in term...
متن کاملDetectors for discrete-time signals in non-Gaussian noise
A6struct-The structure and performance of a class of nonl inear detectors for discrete-time signals in additive white noise are investigated. The detectors considered consist of a zero-memory nonlinearity (ZNL) fol lowed by a linear filter whose output is compared with a threshold. That this class of detectors is a reasonable one to study is apparent from the fact that both the Neyman-Pearson o...
متن کاملPower-law processors for detecting unknown signals in colored noise
We propose a new non-parametric adaptive detector for detecting an unknown broadband signal in interference consisting of non-stationary narrowband components and a locally stationary broadband component. An important feature of this detector is that it needs no prior information about the signal or interference. The proposed detector is based on the integration of the non-parametric power law ...
